A Ballad -
So Ive been writing a ballad for my girlfriend, who I love very much. Shes always been supportive and I wanted to push past my insecurities and write a tune inspired by her faith in me. I figured it would be a good test for me to personally accomplish. Id been listening to a lot of John Hiatt and Bruce Springsteen and I think it came out in the song. After a few lyrical revisions I came up with this progression on acoustic. THe first part was the verse progression and I began humming along and jotting down any words that popped in my head. I wanted to flesh out the melody first and not worry to much baout the words at first.
After a few hours messing around at my kitchen table I came up with the verse and the chorus. The lyrics still need work in my opinion but I figure I can get something down and continue revising. I like how the verse starts in a minor for a softer feel and then it lifts to G major for a brighter happier chorus. The verse has a nice walk down from the G to F# (the 3rd of a d major chord) back around to the E.
I had a Verse Chorus Verse thing going on for a few days and decided I would record it and see how I could inspire myself with some drums underneth. It wasnt until then that I noticed the meter was not your typical 4/4 (4 beats a measure) but rather 6/8. So you would count 6 beats to a measure. Its kind of a slow waltz feel.
